On Tuesday, November 5, Massachusetts voters made a decision that will directly affect high school students in public schools across the state.
Question 2 passed with about 60% of voters approving and 40% of voters disapproving.
From now on, passing the MCAS will NOT be a requirement for graduating high school. Instead, students will need to earn their diploma by completion of required credits set forth by their district.
To be clear, the MCAS isn’t going anywhere – students will still need to take the test in elementary and middle schools, as well as in 9th and 10th grade in high school. These results will be used to study student growth and will still be reported to the State Department of Education.
