This weekend, our Quiz Show team is competing in the qualifying match for season 16 of High School Quiz Show against Weston! We talked to Ms. Farrell, the team’s advisor to learn more about the team and competition.
Team members Phoebe McDermott (‘25), William Giannonpoulos (‘25), Muriel Gibbons (‘26), and Charles Chase Norris (‘27), with alternate Shannon Dennehy (‘25) have been practicing and studying all year to prepare for this competition. They meet weekly to practice together, and additionally study on their own to get as many questions in as possible. By the competition, they have answered thousands of different questions, ranging from biology to current events. Each member has what is called a “specialty”. Ms. Farrell says that “Phoebe’s is literature, Will’s is sports, Muriel’s is pop culture, and Charles’ is geography. All of these specialties help build a well-rounded team that is able to answer questions about almost anything.
To secure a spot in the competition, the team had to attend “Super Sunday”, where about 70 school teams try out by taking a written quiz, and they had to score within the top 15 of all the teams to get to the taped competitions. This year, South is the only public school in Central Massachusetts competing in the competition, and is the only school in Worcester with a team.
The match will take place on Saturday, January 25th, at WGBH in Brighton at 4PM, and if you want to attend to support your classmates and potentially end up on TV, the tickets are free! If transportation is an issue, you can also take the train into the city, which is a really fun experience if you have never taken the train before. The show will be aired on the HSQS YouTube channel on March 1st.
