Autism has always been very misunderstood by the general public, but in modern times, we have research to show us how autism works and how it affects one mentally. To start off, autism is a complex disorder that is a neurodevelopmental disorder, which means the brain’s biological function works differently from someone who does not have autism. Autism is a genetic and environmental disorder, which means that it is a gene that can be passed down. Additionally, if a pregnant mother were to indulge in alcohol or substances, the fetus would be at risk for autism or neurodevelopment disorders.
Overall, autism is very complex and misunderstood even by the 47th president of America. President Donald J. Trump has recently stated at a White House conference that autism is caused by women taking Tylenol when pregnant. “If you’re pregnant, don’t take Tylenol, and don’t give it to the baby after the baby is born.”
“There are certain groups of people that don’t take vaccines and don’t take any pills that have no autism,” he added. “They pump so much stuff into those beautiful little babies, it’s a disgrace.”
He did not add any evidence for his statements because all evidence goes against his word. According to the official Tylenol website, Tylenol is a pain reliever that works by interfering with the body’s pain threshold so the person using it feels less pain. It also lowers fevers by eliminating excess heat in the body. Tylenol is most commonly used for minor aches and pains such as headaches, menstrual cramps, etc. As one can see, none of this has to do with any neurodevelopment disorders or even can cause them for pregnant women.
The side effects of Tylenol, on the official website, are liver problems, allergies, severe skin reactions, and can cause neurodevelopmental outcomes, but on the website it says to ask a doctor or professional before use. Trump saying no pregnant woman should never take Tylenol and shouldn’t give it to their babies is spreading misinformation. Tylenol can be used during pregnancy with a doctor’s approval.
The president of America spreading misinformation about a disorder that is already not well understood has many scientists rushing to disprove his claims. It is important to do research about a topic before you decide to believe anything said by anyone. Tylenol can be used by pregnant women and their children are not guaranteed to have autism and by blaming it on the mothers, Trump is adding to the pressure that first time mothers have to be perfect. It is not the mothers fault for their child having autism, it is a genetic neurodevelopment disorder that cannot be cured.
