South High’s Prom is set to take place on May 22, at Union Station! It is from 6:00 to 10:00, and tickets will be $85. The theme this year is “A Great Gatsby Prom”, which means all things glitz and glamour! The book takes place in 1920s New York City, so imagine flappers, jazz music, and dancing and partying until the morning comes! There are a lot of questions around prom this year, so I asked Ms. Farrell, who is one of the senior class advisors, about it.
In regards to the price of the prom tickets, she says that the student body has outgrown the space at Holy Cross, where the prom has taken place for many years. It could only hold 300 people, which is about 130 people less than the whole senior class. This venue requires the people renting to pay for the dinner, wait staff, any other people working for the venue, and the space itself, which Holy Cross did not require. Ms. Farrell stresses that no chaperone, advisor, or any other staff member from South High is earning any of the profits made by ticket sales. Additionally the price for prom is significantly lower than a lot of other schools! Many other schools have prom ticket prices of $100 or higher, and South is getting a very good deal. All of the money made from ticket sales go straight to prom, and will cover all of those fees, and will be within cents of covering all of the costs.
She is also excited for this change, as Union Station is a beautiful venue! Ms. Farrell says “it looks like a castle!” and is very excited about that. There are many opportunities for beautiful photos, along with the photo booth included. She also says there is a parking garage, which is helpful for students who drive.
Tickets will be sold on Thursdays and Fridays during lunch in the cafeteria for $85. There are a limited number of tickets available, so buy early!
