Do’s and Don’ts of Studying
- Do actually study for a test! Simply paying attention in class and doing the work isn’t enough to understand and apply the concepts.
- Don’t CRAM. You’re more likely to understand and memorize the material if you study 15 minutes for 3 days before the test than 2 hours the night before.
- Don’t reread notes or write down notes verbatim! Try to write notes in your own words and highlight key words.
- Do actively recall the information with practice problems, flashcards, and info-dumping all you know about the topic on a sheet of paper. If you’re reading a book, after reading each chapter summarize what the chapter was about. Try different strategies!
- Don’t study on your bed! Keep your relaxing space and your locked-in space different!
- Do study on a clean table!
- Don’t multitask!
- Do put your phone and other potential distractions in another room if you can!
- Don’t listen to your favorite songs! Songs with lyrics are another distraction!
- Do try listening to colored noises or instrumental versions instead.
- Do take breaks and snack! Reward yourself after 15,20, or 25 minutes of working; just remember to finish everything!
- Drink LOTS of water!
And finally
- Do make note of when your teacher mentions a test or quiz!
