If you head to the middle pod on the third floor during Wednesday, you may overhear the peaceful sounds of LoFi music and soft chatter. The source of this serenity is the Crochet Club, one of the lesser-known clubs held at South High. For this edition of the Club Showcase, we interviewed Hermione Gracia Lopez, ’26, who runs it.
“Me and my partner Scarlett [Lopez, ’26,] were actually members of [the] crochet club. But then the people who ran the club, they graduated. So, me and Scarlet took over the club because we really like to crochet.” Lopez shares. The club, located in Mrs. Abelson’s room (A323), holds weekly meetings from 2-3 PM on Wednesdays. The atmosphere is quiet and peaceful; the lights are turned down low and the music is set at a low volume as to not disturb the members who are working on their crafts. Lopez later explained that “We always have music playing in the background, whether it’s LoFi or song recommendations because we want this to be a nice, calm space for everybody.”

“[In the club,] we teach people how to crochet. We always have materials available, we have yarns and hooks. We usually start off with the basics by making a slip knot and to chain, that’s what we’re currently doing.” Lopez explains. “Once they [the club members] get the hang of it we’re going to teach them how to go onto rows to make little coasters. And once they’re done with that, we’re gonna teach them how to do a magic circle which is the basis of all crochet. And once they got that down we can teach them some stitches like a single crochet, a double crochet, increase, decrease…”
“That’s all that you need to learn, and after that you can start using patterns to make [whatever] you want!” Lopez exclaims.
When asked what she loved about crocheting, Lopez said “You can take a string of yarn and turn it into anything. So in the past I’ve made bunnies, [stuffed] animals for my friends and I’ve made little cats…you can basically make anything with crochet. And that’s what I like about it, because once you start crocheting you kinda lose track of time…you can start by doing something little and be stuck in it for hours.”

Lopez also states that “There’s no requirements to join the club, even if you don’t know how to crochet [or] even if you do, you can join the club, ‘Cause that’s what the club’s for: we teach you! If you already know how to crochet, we can give out patterns for you to use.” Additionally, she added, “We always try to make a community here, to make sure that you don’t feel left behind and we always keep track of the people who were here last week or the people who have just joined, so we can make sure that everyone learns.”
If you’re interested in joining, Lopez shares that you can always reach out via email or through the club’s google classroom. “We always try to have some sort of communication between us and the members to make sure theres no miscommunication.”
