There are plenty of advisories to enjoy at South! and with all these choices we find that one advisory is often overlooked; Badminton. Thankfully, with the help of our Interviewer Keeva Cavanaugh, we here at the Colonel Chronicle are here to answer all your questions; What do you do there? Who runs it? And, is Badminton really all that bad?
Who runs the Badminton advisory?
Ms. Petty and Ms. Brunelle are the teachers who run the Badminton advisory.
When and where does the Badminton advisory meet?
The Badminton Advisory meets during the advisory period every Thursday in the gym. They’d prefer to meet after school, but it’s hard It’s hard to do so. Due to sports practice, there isn’t much gym time available.
What is the goal of the advisory?:
The goal of the advisory is to expose people to badminton, which is a sport that is accessible to any age. Furthermore, not a lot of equipment required, just the rackets and birdie. The goal is to keep people active and give them something fun that they can do for their whole life. Badminton is a little more “low-key” than some other sports, which kids might find too competitive.
What can students gain from joining this advisory?
Students get to socialize and meet other kids, and possibly make friends. They’re able to learn something new and enjoy a fun environment.
What are some of the favorite memories from this advisory?
it’s clear the students love the advisory too! Some kids have held such passion for the badminton advisory that they came back the next year with their own equipment. Other students came into the advisory not knowing anyone, but were soon able to find friends within the advisory.
Petty says that “it’s heartwarming to see students smiling, laughing, and having fun together.”
Do you need to know badminton to join this advisory?
No, not at all. There’s a group for every level of experience, even those who don’t have any experience whatsoever.
There are currently 57 students enrolled in the advisory. With the choices of multiple groups within the advisory, some that prefer to play more competitively, and some of them prefer to have some more chill fun. There’s truly something for everyone to enjoy!
How can people join this advisory?
After winter break, students will be able to select new advisories, and they can choose the badminton advisory on Google Form. If you want to join, that’s the best way to do so.

Petty says that, “Although there are not currently any Worcester High School badminton teams, such teams do exist in other towns outside of Boston.” She believes that there are enough students at South that they could start up their own badminton team! Though, this exciting opportunity would require hard work and downtown approval.
All in all, the badminton advisory is a welcoming space, anyone can join regardless of their experience with the sport. So whether you have been playing for years, or if you’ve barely picked up a birdie, if you’re interested, check off the box on the google form for a blast of a time!
