“Flower crowns are an amazing accessory for so many different things: weddings, baby showers, anniversaries, photoshoots-” mentions Maria Failla, a plant parent and gardener, “but also, they’re an amazing way to connect with the season you’re currently in.” But…where should you start? Beth Syphers, owner of Crowley House Flower Farm, remarks how, “It takes a little patience, a bit of floral magic, and a willingness to embrace the wild, imperfect beauty of nature.”
Gathering materials is a must–unless you’re making imaginary crowns. Here, you should prepare: Bind Wire, Wire Cutters, Pruning Shears to cut stems, Twine or Ribbons, Floral Tape, and of course, your flowers–usually with greenery–of choice with an inch or two of stem left. Now, before you go off picking the flowers as you please, “…there’s balance and placement,” Sypher notes. Decide if their shapes, colors, and textures complement each other. For simplistic designs, and for children, a headband with floral adhesive glued flowers works wonders with its soft, comfortable texture.
With the various ways of crown making, I prefer Failla’s technique because of her unique way of placing flowers in. First, measure the wire around your head, leaving an extra inch on each side. Extend and fold the wire of its original length twice, making three wires. After cutting their ends, make a loop on one end enough to fit the ribbon and close into the wire. Loosely twist the wires like a braid with holes for your flowers, making another loop at the other end. Next, attach tape to the closed part of the loop, adding your flowers in the holes next to it. Whether your flower orientation is chaotic or patterned, make sure gaps aren’t protruding by placing the flowers in a hole an inch before they end. Once you have two flowers in, bring the tape under the first and over the second. Repeat this step, cut excess stems, and fill in holes with more flowers and greenery until you have a crown you’re happy with. In the end, thread the loops with your ribbons–which’ll fasten the crown to you–and enjoy!
Flower crown making is a lovely way to spend time and connect with nature. “They’re a beautiful way to connect with people, host a flower crown making party for you and your friends OR make a crown for a ‘queen’ or ‘king’ in your life.” – Maria Failla
